FAQ'S

Does the Amigo need to sit on top of the laptop screen?

The Amigo is designed to fit on top of most laptop screens; however you can use it on the edge of any thin surface or just stand it up on your desk.

Can I use the Amigo with my desk top computer?

The Amigo can be connected to a USB port on a desktop computer. Most desktop LCD displays are too deep to allow the Amigo to fit on the top of the display, so unless you have a very slim screen, the Amigo will have to go on the desk or an alternative surface.

Does the Amigo require a separate power supply?

The Amigo does not require any external power supply. It takes all the power it needs from the USB connection to your computer.

Does the Amigo require batteries?

The Amigo does not use any batteries. It takes all the power it needs from the USB connection on your computer.

How does the Amigo affect my laptop battery?

If you are using your laptop on battery operation, the Amigo will take its power from the laptop battery, although the speaker is very efficient with power usage, you may notice a slight reduction in the battery running time.

What is NXT "Exciter" technology?

YNXT technology uses a unique type of transducer known as the Exciter. The Exciter itself turns electrical audio signal into vibrations through the use of magnetism. Unlike a traditional speaker, which has a speaker cone, it can be fixed to any solid surface to make the surface vibrate, in turn producing the sound. When combined with a thin, lightweight panel in the Amigo speaker, this results in a very thin speaker with excellent sound.

What is Bi Directional sound?

Normal speakers have a cone designed to direct the sound in one direction. Because the Amigo uses NXT exciter technology, the moving panel affects the air on both sides of the panel, so the sound can be heard well from behind the speaker as well as from the front.

Can I connect the Amigo direct to my MP3 player?

The Amigo will only connect to computer-based devices which have USB Audio Device drivers and a USB socket. This means it can connect to laptop and notebook computers along with some of the "netbook" type computers, but not MP3 players, mobile phones or PDA's.

Can I use the Amigo with a USB hub?

In many cases, there will be no problem using the Amigo with a USB hub. However because the Amigo gets its power from the USB connection, you may find that there will be insufficient power to run the Amigo using some USB hubs.

Does the Amigo have a volume control?

To try and keep things simple, The Amigo does not have a volume control. There are usually several ways to adjust volume on your computer. There will be a system volume control and usually one in the program you are using to play the sound. There are often more specific controls available in the audio settings for your computer.

How loud is the Amigo?

The Speaker only uses 2 x 1.2 watts of power, but because NXT technology is very efficient, it produces a quality sound and volume whilst using the minimum amount of your laptop's battery.

Will the Amigo work better if I use a USB 2.0 connection instead of USB 1.0?

The Amigo works equally well with either.

Can the Amigo be used with a Mac/Linux/any other OS?

The Amigo will work with Mac OSX. Earlier Mac systems do not have full USB support, so it is unlikely to work correctly.

The Amigo uses the standard USB Audio Device drivers, so in most cases it will work without any problems. Most of the major Linux distributions support USB audio, as do many other operating systems.

When I plug the Amigo in the sound does not automatically play through the speakers, why?

Some computers are not set up to change the sound settings automatically when a new device is connected. If this is the case, you will need to go to the sound options and change the output to the USB Audio device.

PC - go to the control panel, sounds and audio devices and select "USB Device" in the 'Default Device' tab.

Mac – in system preferences select the sound option and change the device in the 'change output' tab.

The Amigo does not appear in my "Safely Remove Hardware" list on Windows How do I ensure I can safely disconnect the speaker?

As the Amigo is not involved in any data transfer functions, you can unplug the speaker at any time without damaging your computer or the Amigo.

When I play a song and unplug the Amigo the sound doesn't continue out of the standard laptop speakers, why?

Your media player will check where the sound output is supposed to be going before it starts playing a song, but you will either need to stop the player and start it again, or sometimes close the program and re-open it before it checks again to see if anything has changed.

The cable is not long enough, what can I do?

You can get a USB extension cable if you need the Amigo further away from your computer, but USB connections do have a limit to the length of cable you can use before the signal becomes too weak.

Can I use another set of speakers or headphones at the same time?

On Windows, it is possible, but will depend on your soundcard software or a 3rd party application, as support for multiple simultaneous outputs is not included on Windows XP (or Vista, as far as we are aware).

On Mac, you can use the Audio/Midi setup tool to create an aggregate device which allows you to use more than one sound output at the same time.

Can I use more than one Amigo at the same time?

On Windows, this will depend on your soundcard software or a 3rd party application, as support for multiple simultaneous outputs is not included on Windows XP (or Vista, as far as we are aware) There are applications available which will let you do this.

On a Mac, you can use the Audio/Midi setup tool to create an aggregate device which allows you to use more than one sound output at the same time.

It's cunningly designed to perch on top of your laptop, connects easily to a USB port and creates a powerful loud sound which is absolutely fine for movies, video and games. What more do you want?

When I decided to buy these speakers I did go to the manufacturers website and check out the close up images. The close up pictures show the speakers fitted to an average square edged lid laptop whereas I own a 17.3" Vaio which has a tapered lid edge. Nonetheless I bought them anyway and have by no means been disappointed. Considering the price, the size and that they are USB powered they leave the onboard speakers lacking by a long way. Apparently they utilise the resonance of the Laptop to enhance the speakers sound which seems to work extremely well giving a good bass for their size.

I am using it with a desktop pc so as not to take up too much room on the desk, very nice sound, good product.

Brilliant loud sound with good clarity. My laptop is now a DVD player when away from home and streaming at home is now a pleasure.

Great little things these, solved my problem well and for very little. Both a speaker and the headphone jack were broken on my laptop, and i was getting frustrated with the sound quality through just one speaker. After searching online i found the Amigo, which simply plugs in to my USB and plays. The sound quality is good; currently listening to music on full and there is no distortion. Also, for those interested, the volume is about 2 or 3 times higher than my laptop speaker.
